“Listen, Dan-o. You had to be there. You just had to. I was lucky to stumble into it. Pure, dumb luck. I’m really not surprised at all that you guys all missed it,” Jacobs had told them with a breathless grin. Kain lazily stirred a stew over the fire, and Erin sharpened her knives. “A group of us went out to explore. Well, mostly me, and a few guys who’d been transported along with me.”

Daniel inched closer, wanting to hear everything Jacobs had to say. He wanted to learn from it, wanted to learn from him. “We sort of all woke up in the same spot and just decided to stay together. Once the Wolves were down, we went, well, you know, exploring, thinking we might be able to scrounge up some information, or something we could use for weapons. We were right, but only I survived to tell about it.”

Erin laughed as she looked at Jacobs and the other two smiled good-naturedly, seeing the man bristle at the first bit of heckling. “Always bragging trying to impress us. Just get on with your story. We’ve heard this part a million times.”

Daniel raised his hand to wave off the complaints, fully fixated on what Jacobs was telling him as Kain poured him a small bowl of the stew. “It’s fine, really. I’ve never heard any of this. I’d like to know. I’m surprised I survived the first floor. I mostly just panicked and cried.”

Kain looked away at the admission, and Audrey gave him a sad but encouraging smile as Jacobs reached out with a closed fist, demanding Daniel do the same. The topic had come up before, and the answer was always the same, Forgive yourself for what you had to do when all you could do was survive.

“Enough of that. See, Erin? At least somebody appreciates me,” Jacobs bellowed with a hearty laugh. He pulled out a flask he kept hidden in the pocket of the jacket he wore over his armor, and pulled Daniel towards him with a drunken smile, offering him some. Daniel accepted, and hot liquor poured down his throat into his belly, burning like fire. He felt invincible.

Jacobs, satisfied that he’d been able to salvage the mood, continued his story. “Death, my young friend, was in that sandstorm. Within it were all manner of the undead, like the doom of an entire world, descending, hidden behind a sand curtain. I fought my way through by tooth and nail into the terminal as the undead followed behind me. I alone survived. Inside the terminal, I found what set me apart. Something waiting for me, waiting for anyone to claim it. The power that turned me into the strongest man.”
